Muhammad Hasif bin Mohd Jelani (also known as Hasif Hamsyari; born on 2nd of March 1995) is a Malaysian author with, to date, four novels under his name. The novels are sold at bookstores nationwide and also available to be downloaded as e-book and digital version.
He started his writing career at the age of 14, making him one of the youngest novelists in Malaysia. His first novel was launched at his secondary school, SMK Seri Tanjong, Melaka on 28th February 2009. Many eyes were on him that he received appraisal from many of literary figures, local and international such as Laura Caldwell, Aina Emir and Lily Haslina Nasir. His readers vary from school children to adults.
His first novel, Bagaikan Mimpi, received generally positive reviews from critics. To produce such epic, Malay fantasy novel, he urged himself to read the Malay-Malay dictionary (Kamus Dewan) and sorted out the ancient words used by old Malays. Thus, the novel is said to be, rather, 'heavy' and quite an achievement for a 14 years old boy to write.
He then produced the sequel of Bagaikan Mimpi entitled Bagaikan Mimpi: Srikandi Cintaku in 2010. In 2011, he produced Kopi Manis, a teen comedy novel which is entirely different genre from his first work. The novel received many positive reviews that made him to produced Bintang Madu, the sequel to Kopi Manis, which hit the bookstores' shelves nationwide in April 2014. All the novels were published by KarnaDya Solutions Sdn. Bhd.
Aside from writing book for commercial purpose, he also wrote Diari Wira, a 15-chapters story of his experience from joining the Program Latihan Khidmat Negara (National Service Training Programme). The story was intended to change people's skeptical opinions and perspectives regarding the programme as well as giving some general guidance for the upcoming trainer. It was published on this blog.
The young man also had two of his poems published in the Antologi Muara Pahlawan, a Malay patriotic poems antology published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka WS, the Malaysia's official Institute of Language and Literature.
His talent is honored when he received Hadiah Galakan Penulis Remaja (Promising Teen Author Prize) in Anugerah Sastera Negeri Melaka (Malacca Literary Awards) 2009. He, again, was in highlight when being invited to be the panel for Bual Bicara Program Permata Pintar Negara 2009, a forum dedicated to Malaysia's prominent, successful teen figures in academic, curriculum as well as in literary scene. Hasif is the youngest among them. Together with six more panels, he shared his experiences in front of the wife of the Prime Minister, Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor and hundreds of secondary school students. The programme was held at Tun Razak Chansellery Hall, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
Until now, he often being invited to give a talk as well as launcing events in many schools, primary and secondary, and universities around the country. Now, he had his own special programme namely 'Hasif Hadir' focusing on writing talks and sharing of experience to schools annually in August.
Throughout the years, he has been featured in numerous articles in the local newspapers and magazines and being interviewed by television and radio stations for a few times. He also featured in the book 'Setiap Anak Permata Negara' by Aishah Ali which later was launched by the Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen) Tuanku Haminah Hamidun in 2013.
Previously in his primary school's years, Hasif was a student who actively involved in many academic and curriculum activities and competitions including berzanji, tilawah al-Quran (reciting the Quran), nasyeed, nazam, pantun, singing, drawing and story-telling which he won many of them. He managed to collect more than hundred certificates and 30 trophies during his primary school alone. He was also entitled as the Malacca's Tokoh NILAM for three years in 2006, 2007 and later in his secondary school in 2012.
Now, the Journalism student from UiTM Shah Alam, plans to expand his talent of music making as well as continuing his high-profiled career of novel writing. His fifth novel is expected to be published in 2017, which will showcase his ability to write a science fiction (sci-fi) genre.
Through the Planet Hasif Hamsyari blog, he will share his daily activities, ranging from his career to his hobbies, including reading, music making, travelling and also posting his opinion on general issues as well as tips on fiction writing.
